The Spurs scored twice in the first half. After a free-kick Anderton attempted two shots with the second of the two finding Gary Speed`s leg. The ball was deflected and ended in the back of Given's net. Anderton was involved in the second goal as well when he found Poyet who had no problem sending the ball over Given and making the score 0-2 at the 19th minute of the first half. Newcastle did not produce many chances in the first half and although their performance was improved after the break they did not have what it was needed to score. Even when Boddy Robson's substitutes boosted the team they only managed to produce 4-5 good chances but nothing more. Despite the fact that they did not score Newcastle played well in the last 10 minutes, but that was not enough and let Tottenham go away with the 3 points.

Nikos played for the whole 90 minutes of the game and received a yellow card 9 minutes before the end of it.
