National Team
Nikos has played for
Greece in the men's, youth's and under eighteen's national teams. The first time
he played for the men's team was in the game against Finland, in the Kaftatzoglio
stadium in Thessaloniki, in October 1994. The game was for the qualifiers for
Euro 96 and Greece won with final score 4-0. Unfortunately the team did not manage
to qualify and Nikos did not have the opportunity to play in the English fields, which
he was so looking forward to.
His next set of games with
the National Team were the string of qualifier matches for the French World
Cup. He took part in all of them, but for yet another time Greece did not
manage to qualify. Everyone had kept their hopes up till the very last game against
Denmark. Unfortunately they were very unlucky in that game since they had many opportunities to
score, but had to face a great goalkeeper, no other than the famous Scmhaichel.
The greatest disappointment however was Qualifying games for the Euro 2000 in Holland and Belgium. The teams we had to face were weaker than the National team, but the results the team managed to get were not enough to get them through. The fault relies on the players, as they did not respond to the games' demands.
Still, the players managed not only to quality for Euro 2004, but also, to everyone's surprise, to win it! Nikos was part of the team but never got to see any action due to an injury a few days before the tournament. This was the first time that a Greek time managed to win a football European cup at any level.
